Democrats on "European and Mediterranean Americans"

From the official Democratic Convention website, here is the "Communities" page for "European and Mediterranean Americans:"

The culture and history of European and Mediterranean Americans contribute to America’s unique fabric.

Indeed.
European and Mediterranean Americans will share their voices at the 2012 Democratic National Convention to keep the country moving forward.

This would seem curious, until I read another official Democratic Convention page:

European and Mediterranean Americans Come Together
Posted by Amaia Kirtland on Sep. 3, 2012

European and Mediterranean Americans met in the Ethnic Council meeting at Charlotte Convention Center on Monday, September 3 to discuss the engagement and empowerment of grassroots communities in the political process.

The Ethnic Council is a coalition of leaders representing Democrats who have organized among diverse backgrounds, faiths, ethnicities and demographic or geographic origins. At the convention, they are coming together to support President Barack Obama’s re-nomination and discuss strategies for increasing grassroots participation.

The personal stories of the delegates reflected American diversity and shared heritage.  Members offered ideas about connecting with specific communities as they work to keep our country moving in the right direction.
Maryland State Senator Jim Rosapepe, an Italian-American, is excited to re-nominate President Obama. Senator Rosapepe said, “I think he stands for the values we grew up with: family, education, and community. When Italian-Americans came, we had to stand together. Italian-Americans got ahead by the way others got ahead, by standing together.”

Okay, so the point is not for, God forbid, "European and Mediterranean Americans" to "stand together," but for, say, Italian-Americans to stand together with other Italian-American, for Irish-Americans to stand together with other Irish-American Democrats, all for the greater glory of Barack Obama.

I had never, ever heard the term "European and Mediterranean Americans" before. A look at Google suggests that it's a novel coinage of Obama Campaign, perhaps in the last few days, perhaps much earlier. The earliest usage I can find is from an Obama 2012 page dated November 28, 2008 (that date strikes me as implausible, but possible -- they were setting up Obama 2012 webpages months in 2008?):
European and Mediterranean Americans (sometimes known as Ethnic Americans) for Obama are Americans of varied backgrounds – from the newly naturalized citizen building a family and laying down roots to the fourth-generation family in the US with ties and heritage connected to the land of our ancestors. New Polish-American citizens in Toledo, Irish-Americans in Scranton, Italian-Americans in greater Detroit – these are just some of the stories of American families, stories of resounding hope and affirmation in the American dream – and it is Barack Obama’s story as well.

When viewed properly, all stories are Barack Obama's story.

And here are all 14 official Democratic Convention "Communities:" (Interestingly, the descriptions for 11 of the groups emphasize how their respective caucuses listed will meet during the Convention. The only three groups without their own caucuses are "Americans with Disabilities," "Labor," and "European and Mediterranean Americans.")

OVERVIEW
The Democratic National Convention provides a platform for representation by people of many different origins, orientations and backgrounds. To get involved with a group, find the community that best fits you and see how you can connect with others.

By my count I'm a member of at least seven of these groups.

All Americans are of course African Americans. My distant ancestor was at Jamestown so I'm a First American. I'm a veteran. I'm not an LGBT person but as a BDSMer - a far more persecuted population segment. And I'm wring a book on curing homosexuality. That should count for something.

I don't know about the Faith Caucus. I'm an atheist of course, but I am creating a political movement called "Atheists for Christ". That should qaulify. Shouldn't it?

I guess that no one in the Democratic Party wants to be called White. That would be uncool.

It sounds like a way to start breaking up the white vote before it ever has a chance to coalesce into the White Vote. First step, split whites into European Americans and Mediterranean Americans. Then split European Americans into Anglos, Germans, and Slavs etc. (Franco-American vs. Chef Boyardee?).

They are relentless, these Gramscians, you have to give them that.

"Mediterranean Americans".

I must admit, that's a new one on me, never, ever heard it before.
I suppose the idea is inclusivity of all the nations of the Mediterranean littoral - even though this 'unit' has nver really been used by geographers, encompassing as it does the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia.
Ethnologists do speak of a generalized 'mediterranean race', but surely for the Dems to resort to racial terms like this is rather declasse', one wouldn't have a caucus of 'nordic Americans', would we?
I have a sneaking suspicion it's something to do with Jewishness, Jews rejecting the 'European' label and seeking the creation of a rival (but known only to the Democrat Party), grouping.

This is pretty strange. It seems like they wanted to divide the entire population up so that everyone fits in at least one category, and they had to put People Not of Color somewhere. "European and Mediterranean Americans" was probably the most awkward way they could think of, so they went with that.

Henry Canaday said...

European-Americans stand obediently at the curb, waiting for the light to turn green, even if there is no car coming and no car has come along in half an hour on this street, just like their co-ethnics do in Frankfurt and Munich.

Mediterranean-Americans crouch on curbs where there are no traffic lights because no one would obey them anyway, waiting only for a gap in the streaming traffic to dash across, just like their ethnic peers do in Rome and Naples.

You must learn to be more observant, Steve.

I think it is a very calculated move to splinter the the white vote. It may blow up in their faces, however, if the Italians (for example) start looking at the number of Italian academics or students at the University of Minnesota or Wisconsin, and start insisting on their rights as an underrepresented nationality. At least one federal court has recently decided that "white" is not a "nationality" that can be illegally discriminated against. There are Germans, English, Poles, Czechs, Italians, Irish and other nationalities, however, many of who can be identified by surname.

This may blow up in the Democrats' faces. Surely the "no Irish need apply" legends show historical discrimination against the Irish? Surely the ruthless suppression of the Italian and German peoples, language and culture in the US during WWI and WWII are obvious evidence of historical discrimination? Discrimination from which the "Jersey Shore" Italians still obviously suffer?

The Dems may live to regret this. Zionism says that Jews are a "nation" regardless of where they have ever lived, and that Israel is their "national homeland". Surely their huge over-representation as the cultural elite has caused a correspondingly huge under-representation of blacks, Mexicans, Irish, Italians, Poles, Czechs, Serbs, Croats, Russians, Germans and other nationals?

Now that the Democrats/Urban Elite approve of special white identities/nationalities (other than Jews alone) all hell may break loose.

The picture alone tells quite a tale of degeneracy and dissolution.

A blowzy, fat, late middle aged woman, makeup applied with a paint roller, cleavage exposed, clad in a fuchsia patent leather jacket. The ginormous red fingernails are a nice touch for that streetwalker look.

And the bags under her eyes and the weariness in her face further belie the utopia promised by the banner she waves. I see nothing but righteous selfishness in that empty visage, perhaps once fueled by youthful idealism, but now just running on auto, reflex, and brainwashing.

Is this woman the ideal to which Democrats and cultural Marxists hope their young daughters aspire? How could they put up such a picture on a website gushing about change and hope?

There is obviously a vast gulf of mutual incomprehension here. Can anyone envision "community" or even bear political union with such people?

The first thing Americans of Italian extraction did when they got here was learn to speak standard English. My grandfather, for example, forbade Italian in the home, and spoke it only when he visited his sisters. To the extent they "got ahead" (and of course they didn't compared to Germans and Scandinavians), it was that, rather than "standing together." Blacks, of course, have always been uninterested in standard English, and that's why nobody with a brain should have any sympathy for them.

Not only does this rob the larger community of unity, as you point out, but this also robs people of personal opinions and individuality.

Here's an anecdote. The high school I attended was incredibly diverse- 48 first languages spoken. Every year we had a morning half day assembly that was the diversity festival. The Hispanic Club, the Chinese Club, The Russian Club, The African American Student Union and dozens of other such organizations would be announced and offer an artistic performance- singing, dancing or both. Sometimes a certain country or ethnicity would be announced even though it didn't have a club and a few people affiliated with that ethnicity would come out to perform some sort of an ethnic arts thing to honor their origin. There was only one girl representing Indonesia. She would come out in a national costume and do some kind of a bird dance to Indonesian music.

And then, during the assembly/festival of my Junior year, right after "Korea" was done performing, the teacher on microphone duty announced "Dennis". A guy named Dennis, who was in competitive dance since he was five and who was able to get enough leverage over his parents to quit ballroom and ballet lessons only by the time he reached high school, came out and performed a beautiful piece with a sword to what sounded like computer game music. It was honestly the only enjoyable show of the whole 3.5 hour event. When the votes were counted, Dennis had the second place. Granted, Dennis was a lot more talented and had a lot more background training than average, but I'm sure the other kids would have been able to present us with something a lot more captivating than they did, if they didn't feel restricted by the need to do something ethnic, and tied to their specific origin. I was actually pretty impressed with my high school for allowing Dennis to go ahead as a man without a nation.

As someone whose great -grandfather forbade also Italian in the home (are you who I suspect you are?), I can say with confidence that your last sentence makes no sense. Black English is no different than any other ethnic or regional dialect of American English. It's like saying that white Southerners have no interest in speaking "standard English."

If that was the case, then they would have separated them into different categories. White ethnics such as Irish and Poles would fall into the "European" category so the two terms "European" and "Mediterranean" don't refer to WASPs and white ethnics, respectively.

It's obvious why they appended "and Mediterranean". "European" alone connotes indigenous Europeans and they want to include people like Armenians, Jews, Lebanese, etc. who might feel left out if they just used "European".

European and Mediterranean Americans (sometimes known as Ethnic Americans) for Obama are Americans of varied backgrounds – from the newly naturalized citizen building a family and laying down roots to the fourth-generation family in the US with ties and heritage connected to the land of our ancestors.

Wow, this group goes way back four generations, eh? Amazing.

Except I'm "European-American" and I go back 12+ generations on several lines, and 8 or more on all of them. Guess I don't count...

"Its a recognition by the Dems that these despicable whites that they piss on, pick the pockets of, and make slave labor, are still a very large voting bloc"

The speaking line-up for one night at the Democratic Convention had six white guys in a row (former CEOs of Intel and Costco, plus several politicians). I saw that and realized, "My God, they're actually trying to pretend they care about whites." Not sure the middle-class white guy cares about the views of a Forbes 500 CEO, though.

- Obama has Dennis covered under 'gay'.

Southern Europeans in my family are far more racially aware than the average American and also much less likely to vote Democrat. They are largely business owners whose childhood neighborhoods were block busted back in the 1970's and moved as far as they could to avoid the undertow. The Slavic side is made up of business professionals with various connections to organized labor, and they'll never vote Republican.

"But you just as much as admitted that despite being just as eligible for legacy candidacy as anyone else, it's not enough for blacks, and they need extra help."

No, it's hard to build a legacy, Sport, when you can't buy property or attend college, that's the simple reason why you don't get a log of black "legacy" admits.

"Say what you will, but Romney really did give away his inheritance and start over, living in a tiny little basement apt. in Utah. What he had was smarts.

No shit? That's balls, too. Funny how this is the first time I'm hearing this."

No; first of all Romney CLAIMS to have given his inheritance away, he has never substantiated this, secondly his father died when he was FORTY-NINE YEARS OLD. So living in a basement with his wife, 5 grown men, and billions of dollars in Bain, send jobs to Beijing money is quite an accomplishment!

Unless there is a huge increase in white racial consciousness soon, expect to start seeing increasing numbers of "European and Mediterranean Americans" declining to identify as "white" and instead trying to stowaway on the minority victim group gravy train.

"Hate speech" is really speaking the truth that Jews hate us. So, Jews are free to hate us, but we cannot say they hate us. Speaking the truth about Jew is 'hate speech'.

Let's just say Jews tend to have an adversarial relationship with reality, particularly racial reality.

Europe is little more than the western peninsula of northern Asia. It is not much of a geographical continent, and carries too much cultural baggage from the Crusades, Age of Discovery, and the Cold War.

That's just something people who hate Europeans (and European existence) say.

Europe and the Mediterranean does make more sense.

It's not nonsensical to see (or value) a connection, but there's no reason it makes more sense.

- No, Spot, its harder for the average black to build a legacy as their IQ is substantially lower on average, they're more impulsive, they place far more emphasis on feel-good benefits here and now over greater rewards down the road, and are more crime-prone, compared to everyone else; those are the simple reasons why you don't get a log of black "legacy" admits.

Divide and rule. Rinse and repeat until dissolved.

Yes, because white people identifying as one monolithic race has worked so well until now.

"Divide and rule", or "defense in depth"?
The transition from one large party to a loose alliance of related blocs has worked quite well for the Israeli Right in recent years.
